"The Jesus" is my Bowling Buddy

As if this place wasn't bizarre enough, it turns out that Canada has their own version of Bowling. Have you heard about this?! Yet another thing I have to adapt to. They've taken our game and (like everything else) tweaked it just a little.

The game of 5-Pin is just that. There are only 5 Pins. 5 widely-spaced pins. Instead of two turns to knock down the pins, you get three - which I initially thought was ridiculous but quickly found out is imperative...especially for beginners. It's harder than it looks!

The bowling balls are different too. You no longer have to peruse racks and racks of balls for the right weight and color. All the balls are the same. They are small enough to palm (no holes) and only weigh a few pounds. This makes it extremely difficult to throw straight - which seems to be the way to win. This is what I get after years of perfecting my curve and spin.... Let's just say the I was no stranger to
the gutter.

Don't even ask me how the scoring works. A spare was marked R and there were a few other symbols that looked like Hieroglyphics. All I know is that my high score for the night was a 91. Heh.

My review is simple: No thanks. I'll stick to good ole 10 pin for the sound alone. (You know you love it too!) My bowling game is very dependent on the domino effect, particularly after a few pitchers of beer.

  1. I couldn't make a permanent switch, but I would love to try this at least once. Don't forget to take us "Canadian bowling" when we come visit one day.

Becoming Canadian

I can't believe we've only been here for 2 months. It definitely feels longer. This is usually around the time that I start to get really homesick - you're in a new place, it's not really new anymore and you don't re ally know anyone. Most of you know I've done this moving thing more than The ever-intimidating maple leaf. Image by Antony Pranata via Flickr a few times. So much, in fact, that I know those feelings will eventually pass - You wake up one day and you are home . The big difference with this move has been our friends. We had a clique waiting for us. Sure, some of them were merely acquaintances when we arrived but falling in love with us doesn't take long. lol These people have never let us sit home. We've been going, going, going. And that has been a welcome distraction from thinking about the fact that we are so far away from our families. Canadian culture takes a little getting used to, of course. The subtle differences are enough t...

What's happening to me?!

A crazy thing happened on my 30th birthday - I had my first unexplained pain. I'm serious. It was amazing. Like my body was trying to tell me "You're OFFICIALLY not a kid anymore." I know I'm not old...far from it. And, generally, I'm in good health and feel pretty good. But, after 30+ years of use even the most efficient  machine is going to show some wear and tear. It will need some special maintenance and extra love. Geez, I sound like a used car. Matt and I were discussing this the other night. He turned to me as we were watching television and said, "have you noticed it's harder to get comfortable?" Yes, I have. Those positions that used to bring me such lazy joy now seem like they are designed to kill me. My favorite sleep position, for example, used to be laying on my tummy with my hands under the pillow. Today, my arms go to sleep and I wake up with pins and needles. Not to mention a "crick" in my neck. lol Oh, the "cri...

We should have named her Petri

Attention all brand-new Mommies and Mommies-to-be: Here's something no one told me -- Your immune system is about to be tested like it's never been tested before!! I was prepared to sterilize, sanitize and compulsively wash my hands. We spend the first year just trying to keep these little nuggets healthy. What I wasn't prepared for was that my getting sick is inevitable. If she sniffles, I'll be sniffling the next day. If she sneezes, I'm soon to follow....then, Daddy. Yep, it's a family affair. And what seems to be a mild cold in her gets amplified in our giant bodies. No fun. We've just spent the last two days in quarantine thanks to baby. And I still have no idea where it came from. Now, to disinfect.... What's going to happen when she starts school?! Maybe we'll just put her in a bubble. Save ourselves some trouble. Otherwise, I guess we have Malaria to look forward to. Have you met our daughter?
