5 Romantic Comedies Loved by Men

Valentine's Day is upon us again. Love is in the air. Soon, many couples will be observing the holiday with a familiar routine; dinner and a movie. But thanks to sappy commercials, menus for two and heart-shaped boxes of chocolate, the pressure is on that this particular dinner and a movie be dripping in romance. This year, she may suggest "50 Shades of Grey." (I'm sorry.) And you may even agree. I mean, let's face it, isn't February 14th (for the coupled) just an extended pre-coitus waltz? And furthermore, isn't the whole thing a bit girly for most men? Some KFC and Netflix would suit most of them just fine....followed by sex, of course. (BEST VALENTINE'S DAY EVER.)

It got me thinking though. Is the whole romantic movie concept just a chore to them. My Husband is definitely in the minority. He likes a romantic comedy -- even some cheesy ones. (Pretty Woman, anyone?) So I asked a few other dudes. Turns out there are a few movies that will not only NOT make their stomachs turn but that they actually enjoy...like, they've watched it alone. So, this Valentine's Day (or really any other occassion) when you're trying to get him to agree to a mush-fest, here are a few that apparently won't make them gag. (Hint: They're more open to a Rom-Com than a Rom-Dram, in my experience.)

5 Romantic Comedies loved by Men (who knew?)

1. High Fidelity (2000)
We'll start with the one all about lists in my blog with a list. The ever-lovable Lloyd Dobler...er, John Cusack is freshly broken up at the film's start. This heartbreak forces him the recount his top 5 breakups. The downward spiral begins. I think men like this one because of it's truthfulness. There are no bells and whistles. There's no kissing in the rain. There is no musical crescendo as lovers run into each other's arms. There's a dude. He's sad. He has friends to get him through. Sound familiar?

2. The Wedding Singer (1998)
To be fair, I don't know anyone who didn't like this movie. In an innocent time when Adam Sandler movies were funny, even touching, we were given this amazing-sountracked, full-of-one-liners, nostalgic gem with a cuter than ever Drew Barrymore as the cherry on top. It's just good fun with a slew of memorable character's and the sweetest version of Rapper's Delight I've ever heard.

3. When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Perfection. It's funny. It's witty. It's real. And it's what every rom-com aspires to be. Known to most as "that movie where Meg Ryan fakes an orgasm", the real beauty lies in the subtleties. Nora Ephron was some kind of writer. Do you know any woman who can tackle dialogue like "Don't fuck with Mr. Zero!", "Waiter, there is too much pepper on my paprikash." and "I love that after I spend the day with you, I can still smell you perfume on my clothes." Friends become lovers and I think guys dig that idea. You really know me...yet, you love me...happily ever after.

4. Serendipity (2001)
Ok. in all honesty, this is not one of my favorites. The Hubs got me to watch it because it stars John Cusack. But he loves it. This may be one of those rare occurrences where guys actually like it more than we do. (So, maybe we'll get the bonus points for suggesting it.) It's all about destiny - letting things play out as they will. So, ok, I get it. Men are just lazy?

5. Groundhog Day (1993)
Pretty much any Bill Murray movie is going to get you in good with your fella. Lucky for us all, this is a really great one. At first, it's about a narcissistic weather man living the same day over and over and over again. But, he slowly realizes the extra time is a blessing and not a curse. A gift he uses to make himself the man he's always wanted to be. And in the end...he gets the girl.

Ok...one more.

6. Die Hard (1987)
Because it belongs on every list.

"Shall I light some candles?"

Happy Hearts Day!

5 Things I've learned so far...

1. Our baby has fingerprints already. I'm not sure why but this freaks me out. 2. Pregnancy heartburn is NO JOKE. Before this, I think I'd had heartburn twice in my life. I'm Mexican for Christ's sake! We love our spicy food. I guess I have to go easy for the next few months. Boo. 3. I can't watch "A Baby Story" without being reduced to a sobbing mess. But I find myself turning the channel for the delivery part. 4. The placenta & baby (aka alien) are about the size of an avocado right now. 5. Our baby will have duel citizenship. Cool, huh?

Whole30 - Day 2

I popped out of bed today with a meal plan in place and feeling pretty proud for completing yesterday. Bring on Day 2! Day 2 How the book says I'll feel : "The Hangover." I was to expect headaches, fogginess and general blah-ness. How I actually feel : Pretty good considering how I (well, we) felt when we went to bed last night. I was expecting to be pained and dumb today. No pain. No dumb. Breakfast was good. (And lovingly prepared by the Hubs) I wasn't actually very hungry but finished it like a good girl knowing that I would be famished soon if I didn't. My headache is gone and I went to bed without heartburn for the first time in about a week. #winning I am sad to report, however, that coffee sans cream is still grody. The Hubs also prepared a delicious protein salad for lunch. I licked my plate clean. I was feeling pretty hungry right before. (ate a few almonds) But the salad was great and very satisfying. Still had to pick up a few things at the ...

Whole30 - Day 8

A new day. A new week. And hopefully we'll get some new benefits from this program. Whole30 at a glance. Day 8 How the book says I'll feel : "Nooo! My pants are TIGHTER!" Some fancy things are supposed to be happening in my gut. Using new energy, working properly...all that. And as such, some experience a short-lived bloating. How I actually feel: I didn't wear pants today so I'm not sure if they were tighter but I didn't feel bloated. Quite the opposite. I was a ball of energy today. And very productive. My 2 p.m. crash didn't happen. I'm really okay with that. Breakfast was scrambled eggs (again), and some left over veggies from my roasted chicken a few nights ago. It was pretty good. Coffee wasn't as nasty sans cream. I read an article that told me to try coconut milk. I just don't know.... For the first time, I was on my own for lunch. I made "Mexican Tuna Boats" - A recipe from the Whole30 book and they were fa...
